On June 17, 2004, NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP) and the U.S. Navy began a two-week expedition at the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary to examine and document the condition of the wreck and to retrieve equipment left at the site following recovery of the turret in August 2002. The expedition is a cooperative effort involving the NMSP, the USS Grasp, Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit Two, and The Mariners' Museum.
