Monitor National Marine Sanctuary
Shipwreck Photo Contest

NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary is launching a shipwreck photography competition that aims to showcase and celebrate North Carolina's rich and diverse maritime heritage.

Photographers from all over the world are invited to submit their best photos of any shipwreck or other maritime heritage resource located above or below North Carolina's waters.

Winners will receive a framed North Carolina shipwreck site plan of their choice created by NOAA archaeologists and their partner organizations. To view site plans currently available click here.

Photo Categories

Photos will be accepted from May 1 to November 1, 2016, in the following categories:

  • a. Underwater shipwreck
  • b. Shipwreck above water
  • c. Maritime archaeological site other than shipwreck
    (i.e. aircraft, jetty, lighthouses, fish traps, etc.)
  • d. Macro photography involving maritime heritage
  • e. Wildlife and maritime heritage

How to Enter

Submit your completed Entry Application and images (minimum of 1200 pixels wide) to All images MUST include the following information: photographer's full name, contact details, the category the image is being submitted to and the name and location of the site.

Photo entries will be highlighted on the Monitor NMS's website and on our Facebook page. The winning photos will be announced in December 2016.

Additional Contest Rules

  • To be eligible for entry into categories, images must be of shipwrecks or other maritime heritage resources in North Carolina.
  • Photographers must be at least 13 years of age or older as of May 1, 2016.
  • We will assume that, in submitting a photo, you are the owner of the photo and have the right to publish it (including image release and permission/model release forms for anyone identifiably pictured).
  • By submitting a photo, you are giving us permission to use the photo for other purposes, such as on our website and in other NOAA publications. We will, of course, provide credit to photographers whenever we use any of the photos.
  • Photos that are submitted without information on the photographer and a brief caption will not be considered.
  • No watermarks on submitted photos.
  • Photos should be a minimum of 1200 pixels wide (but the bigger, the better!)
  • Please limit your total number of photo submissions to 10 entries.
  • Please keep it clean and on topic (shipwrecks!) and know that photos will not be considered that fall outside of our competition policy.
